Dr. Maude Elizabeth Seymour Abbott was among the first Canadian women to receive a higher education. She completed her M.D., C.M. at the University of Bishop's College, and went to Vienna for further studies. She returned to Montreal to practice medicine and was soon appointed director of the McGill University Medical Museum, an institution which became a first-rate teaching tool for medical students and a resource base for practitioners.
Abbott's skills in pathology drew the interest of William Osler, who asked her to write the chapter on congenital heart disease in his classic text, "Modern Medicine".
By the end of her career, Dr. Abbott was recognized as a world authority on heart defects.
