Discovery Days in Health Sciences

Discovery Days in Health Sciences are one-day events that give secondary school students the opportunity to explore a variety of career options in medicine and the health sciences. The program is delivered in partnership with universities, hospitals and research institutions across Canada.

EQUITY & INCLUSION:
We recognize that diversity, equity and inclusion strengthen the health sciences, health systems and health care communities and leads to enhanced quality, social relevance and impact of health-related disciplines.

Throughout all its activities, the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame strives to engage and promote the active participation of individuals of diverse backgrounds, including those from historically underrepresented groups.  We actively seek a diverse pool of award nominations so that those honoured may reflect the diversity of our communities.

A Discovery Day comprises a dynamic keynote lecture, interactive workshops and a career panel discussion. High school students gain a clearer picture of what it would be like to be a health professional by interacting with researchers, clinicians and educators in their real-life work setting. Teachers/guidance counsellors are also welcome, but not required to attend.  Pre-registration is required.

The Canadian Medical Hall of Fame is committed to fostering inclusion and supporting the leadership efforts at Canadian universities to change the diversity pathway to medicine and the health sciences. We encourage teachers to include students who self-identify as Indigenous, Black or a Person of Colour, or who come from a rural or known disadvantaged socioeconomic background, when considering who will be invited to attend this event.

WHAT WE ARE HEARING ABOUT THE PROGRAM...

“Growing up in rural Newfoundland there was no exposure to the wide variety of fields within health care and medicine. I distinctly remember the anatomy lab at my first Discovery Day at Memorial University. It was amazing! It sparked my interest in a heath care career and led me to where I am now. I am so grateful that I was given that opportunity.”  Student, St. John's NL

"On behalf of my class I would like to thank you so much for the BEST field trip I have ever been on!!!!! We all had such a great time and learned sooo much! We really look forward to attending next year. Thanks for all the work you and your team put in to making the event happen."  Teacher, Edmonton AB
