New applications will be accepted beginning March 1, 2018.

The deadline to submit an application is June 10, 2018.

Scholarship opportunities are available to grade 12 high school students (outside Quebec) and first and second-year attending ‘Collège d’enseignement général et professionnel’ (CEGEP) students (in Quebec) who are aspiring to a career in medicine or the health sciences. Candidates in CEGEP must be attending a program that leads to university studies.

The value of the scholarship is $4,000 distributed as $1,000 per year for up to four years of post-secondary education at any accredited Canadian university. First-year CEGEP students may defer their scholarship (if awarded) for one year while they complete their second-year at CEGEP.

Four scholarship recipients will be selected each year, one from each of the following geographic regions: 1) Western provinces (AB BC MB SK); 2) Ontario; 3) Quebec; 4) Atlantic provinces and Territories (NB NL NS PE NT NU YT).

Scholarship recipients are chosen based on the following criteria:

  • Academic excellence (applicants must have an average of 85% or higher to apply)
  • Examples of tasks or activities that demonstrate your ability to:
    • Lead other people
    • Work in collaboration with others
    • Communicate effectively
    • Raise awareness about social issues that you are passionate about
    • Live your life with honesty, integrity, respect and compassion
  • Awards and recognition
  • Extra-curricular activities and community service
  • Evidence of interest in pursuing an education and career in medical/health sciences.

To be considered for a scholarship for the next academic year, applications must be received by June 10 each year – no exceptions.

Successful candidates will be notified by email no later than August 10th.

The scholarship is administered in association with the AFMC and the selection is made by a committee comprising the CMHF board student rep, a faculty of medicine administrator and chaired by Dr. Michael J. Rieder.

Scholarship recipients must maintain an 80% average or higher annually and remain in a health sciences related field of study to be granted the subsequent amounts.

Online applications only will be considered.

Scholarship Application Form

Along with completing the web form, you need to attach the following:
...a current transcript confirming an 85% or greater average
...three letters of reference from individuals who know you well and are able to describe your character, personal qualities, and academic and non-academic accomplishments
...a personal essay that, as a general guideline, addresses interests and non-academic qualities, describes your future education and career goals, and outlines how you hope this scholarship will help you achieve your goals (specifications: maximum 350 words, double-spaced, 12 pt Arial font, and word count at the end of your essay)

There are fields for you to attach these documents to your online application.

If a Referee would prefer to send their reference letter directly to the Scholarship Review Committee, please ask them to email their letter to Trish Grover: tgrover [at]  You will be able to select this as an option in the application form instead of attaching the letter in the provided field.

It is important to mention that we are expecting examples that demonstrate your skills for leadership, collaboration and communication, as well as your ability to interest people in issues about which you are passionate and a lifestyle characterized by honesty, integrity, respect and compassion.
